NIO Super Specialty Hospital, one of India’s leading super specialty eye-care hospitals, have been recognised  with the esteemed Appreciation Award” by the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology (IJO) for their ground breaking research and contribution in the field of ocular oncology.

Dr. Harsh Jain,  Vitreoretina Surgery Fellow and Dr. Aditya Kelkar, Director,  NIO Super Specialty Hospital have received the award for their research paper on “Ultra-Widefield Imaging in Choroidal Melanoma.” The research paper adjudged by Indian Journal of Ophthalmology (IJO) will present the award certificate at the All India Ophthalmological Conference to be held in Jaipur next month. The study is focused on enhancing the early detection and documentation of choroidal melanoma using advanced ultra-widefield imaging technology.

“Ultra-widefield imaging allows us to visualise larger areas of the retina in a single capture. This enhances our ability to detect tumours at an earlier stage and document their progression more accurately. Early identification is critical in managing choroidal melanoma and preventing systemic spread,” said Dr. Kelkar.

Choroidal melanoma is a rare but serious form of eye cancer that develops inside the eye and can spread to other parts of the body if not diagnosed and treated in time. Early and accurate diagnosis plays a crucial role in improving patient outcomes. The research conducted by the NIO team analysed how ultra-widefield imaging enables ophthalmologists to capture wider and clearer retinal images compared to conventional methods, thereby improving diagnostic precision.

The research was selected among some of the best scientific papers published in Indian Journal of Ophthalmology 2025 across the country, reflecting the growing importance of advanced imaging techniques in modern ophthalmology.
