The Kolathur Zone of the Tamil Nadu Chemists and Druggists Association (TNCDA) recently celebrated its Silver Jubilee Anniversary and Annual General Body Meeting with a grand assembly in Chennai. This milestone event not only honoured a quarter-century of organizational consistency but also served as a vital forum for addressing the rapidly evolving pharmaceutical landscape. By strategically scheduling the session during a midday break, the organizers ensured maximum participation, reinforcing a deep commitment to the professional unity and accessibility of the local drug trade community. A central theme of the convention was the urgent need for technological transformation within the retail pharmacy sector. Sabari Sankar, CEO of Wondersoft, highlighted that for traditional brick-and-mortar pharmacies to compete with rising digital giants, adopting modern inventory and customer management systems is essential. Through live demonstrations, members explored how digital tools can streamline supply chains and enhance customer retention, ensuring that the neighbourhood pharmacy remains the primary healthcare touchpoint in an increasingly digitized marketplace. TN CDA president S.A. Ramesh delivered a data-driven keynote focusing on the long-term sustainability of the traditional pharmacy model. Despite the influx of heavy corporate investment, he argued that personalized care and immediate local accessibility remain insurmountable competitive advantages. He motivated members to approach the future with renewed energy, focusing on high-touch service and professional expertise to protect and grow their market share in a shifting economy. Addressing regulatory and operational hurdles, state secretary G. Ashok provided an in-depth briefing on the challenges facing both retail and wholesale drug distributors. He detailed the strategic initiatives being spearheaded by the TNCDA to safeguard the interests of small business owners. The discussion emphasized the necessity of a unified front to navigate complex pricing regulations and the logistical pressures exerted by large-scale market entrants and e-pharmacy aggregators. The event also underscored the unique social standing of pharmacy owners as frontline healthcare providers. J Jayaseelan, chairman of Puthiya Thalaimurai, pointed out that the physical proximity of pharmacists to their communities creates a trust equity that corporate entities cannot replicate. He urged members to leverage this social capital to advocate for community wellness and natural living, suggesting that a pharmacist’s role should evolve from merely dispensing medicine to serving as a proactive guardian of public health. Beyond commerce, the meeting prioritised the holistic welfare of its members through significant health and financial initiatives. In a move reflecting the association’s 'heal the healer' philosophy, all attendees underwent Hepatitis B and C screenings. Furthermore, the introduction of an Rs. One Lakh free insurance policy through Galaxy and a partnership with Tata AIG for supplementary income opportunities demonstrated the association’s commitment to the economic and physical security of the pharmaceutical workforce. The Silver Jubilee concluded with the formal presentation of the annual audit and a solemn tribute to departed members, signalling a transition into a new era for the trade in Chennai. As the meeting adjourned with a vote of thanks by Suresh, the message was clear that the future of the pharmacy sector lies in the perfect synergy of traditional trust and modern efficiency. The Kolathur Zone has set a high benchmark, proving that regional trade bodies can empower their members to remain resilient against global market volatility.
