Exports of drugs and pharmaceuticals from the country reported a growth of 0.96% during the month of January, 2026, and 5.82% for the first ten months of the fiscal year 2025-26, on a Year-over-Year (YoY) basis.
According to preliminary data from the ministry of commerce and industry, exports of drugs and pharmaceuticals during the month of January stood at $2.61 billion, compared to $2.59 billion in the same month of last year.
The overall merchandise exports reported a marginal growth of 0.61% at $36.56 billion during the month, as against $36.34 billion registered during the corresponding month, last year with a major impact on the exports to US, owing to the higher tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump, according to reports. With the imports growing 19.2% during the period, the trade deficit widened to $34.68 billion in January.
In pharma sector, in rupee terms, the exports grew 6.26% at Rs. 23,746.55 crore in January, as against Rs. 20,245.33 crore during the same month last year.
During the ten months ended January 31, 2026, pharma exports reported a growth of 5.82% to $25.72 billion as compared to $24.31 billion during the same period a year ago.
In rupee terms, the exports grew 10.29% during the ten months, at Rs. 2,25,613.68 crore, compared to Rs. 2,04,558.57 crore during the same period of previous fiscal year.
Imports of medicinal and pharmaceutical products reported a growth of 1.3% at $791.9 million during January, as compared to $781.71 million on a YoY basis. Imports during the first ten months of the current fiscal year grew 6.92% to $8 billion, as against $7.48 billion in the same period a year ago.
In rupee terms, the growth in imports was around 6.63% for the month of January, at Rs. 7,190.37 crore, compared to Rs. 6,743.52 crore reported during January, last year. For the first ten months of the fiscal year, imports grew 11.48% to Rs. 70,203.60 crore, as compared to Rs. 62,976.17 crore in the corresponding period of previous fiscal year.
As reported earlier, the exports of drugs and pharmaceuticals from the country reported a growth of 5.65% during the month of December, 2025 at $2.63 billion, compared to $2.49 billion in the same month of previous year.
Imports of medicinal and pharmaceutical products reported a growth of 10.31% to $914.06 million during December, as compared to $828.61 million on a YoY basis.
Exports registered a growth of 6.46% in the first six months of the fiscal year, from April to September, 2025, at around $15.38 billion, as against around $14.45 billion on a YoY basis. Exports during the month of September reported a year-over-year growth of 2.56% at $2.62 billion as compared to $2.55 billion in September, last year.
Imports reported a growth of 7.21% during the six months, to $4.65 billion, as compared to $4.34 billion in the same period of previous fiscal year, while for the month, the imports grew 16.51% at $768.15 million as compared to $659.29 million on a YoY basis.
Exports registered around 5.2% growth in the first three months of the current fiscal year, from April to June, 2025, while imports reported a growth of 4.1%, compared to the corresponding quarter of previous year. |
