Artificial intelligence (AI)-supported medical language tools, today, convert technical terms into simpler explanations for patients with physical and cognitive disabilities. Clear instructions have also reduced errors and repeated visits, according to Saurav Kasera, co-founder and CEO, CLIRNET and DocTube.
He further adds that medical language remains a barrier for many patients. Prescriptions and discharge notes are often difficult to follow. Misunderstanding affects treatment compliance. Technology has often reinforced these gaps. Many health platforms were designed without disabled users in mind. AI is now being applied to correct some of these failures.
This is a significant development as healthcare access remains uneven for people living with disabilities. This is true across income groups and health systems. An estimated 1.3 billion people globally live with a disability. That is close to 16 per cent of the world’s population. Yet most healthcare infrastructure is still built for a narrow definition of ability. Rates of depression, diabetes and cardiovascular disease are higher among people with disabilities. Life expectancy is also lower in many regions. These trends have remained consistent over time.
Talking about the relevant trends, Kasera further informs that AI-based captioning and transcription tools are now being used during consultations. Deaf and hard of hearing patients can follow conversations as they happen. Accuracy has improved with exposure to varied accents and speech patterns. Support for regional sign languages is also expanding. This reduces dependence on interpreters during routine visits. Direct interaction becomes possible. Image recognition tools now describe prescriptions, reports and diagnostic images. Patients can review documents independently.
Voice-controlled systems help those who cannot use keyboards or touchscreens. Navigation becomes possible without physical input. Text-to-speech tools ensure written content is accessible across platforms.
Kasera explains, “Care without constant travel is becoming more achievable through digital health tools. Physical access to hospitals remains a major challenge, especially for patients with mobility limitations. Frequent visits are exhausting, time-consuming, and expensive. Virtual consultations help reduce this burden, while AI-supported nursing assistants provide reminders and basic guidance from home. This makes follow-ups easier to manage and allows patients to stay connected to care without constant travel. Wearable devices are also playing a growing role. They monitor indicators such as heart rate, movement, and sleep patterns. When readings cross defined thresholds, alerts are triggered. These early warnings allow timely action, helping to prevent emergencies and avoid unnecessary hospital admissions. Over time, this supports better long-term disease management and improved patient outcomes.”
Rehabilitation and ongoing care benefit from similar advancements. Recovery requires sustained effort, yet standard programmes often ignore individual differences. AI-driven tools can adjust exercise plans based on a person’s progress, changing intensity as needed. This creates a more personalised recovery experience. For chronic conditions, consistency is essential. Adaptive tools support long-term routines without constant supervision, while predictive systems help identify risks of secondary complications. Preventive care becomes possible instead of delayed intervention.
“However, technology is not neutral. Design choices influence outcomes. Tools trained on limited data often fail users with speech impairments or disabilities. In healthcare, such failures affect diagnosis, access, and trust. Bias in health technology limits who benefits from innovation. Inclusion must begin at the design stage, with people with disabilities involved in data selection, testing, and deployment. Responsibility is shared. Developers, educators, regulators, and healthcare providers must treat accessibility as essential,” Kasera concludes.
